An often-overlooked factor contributing to high energy bills and low comfort is air infiltration and exfiltration. In other words, your home or building may be exchanging your nice, comfortable, conditioned air from inside with the unconditioned air from outside at astounding rates! Little leaks all add up to make a big difference in your heating and cooling costs. It’s a lot like your grandpa used to say when you left the door open, “you’re letting all the heat out!” Or in! The reality is that sealing these air leaks, or thermal bypasses, is actually quite complicated, and is best handled by experts who know where to find them and how to seal them properly. The leakiest part of your home or building is often the ceiling that separates the inside space from the attic. At Central Insulation, our experts can seal the main sources of air leakage including plumbing penetrations, fireplace and HVAC flue pipes, recessed lights, in-ceiling speakers, cold air returns, electrical wire holes, attic access doors and lids, and much more.
Attic Bypass Sealing reduces the amount of air exchanged between the conditioned, comfortable indoor spaces and the harsh outdoor conditions, thereby reducing the demands of your HVAC system to heat and cool your indoor space. In addition, proper air sealing helps to reduce dust, minimize or eliminate drafts, achieve better temperature balance from room to room, and can also help you qualify for rebates from your utility company.
A visual inspection may be all that is needed, but in many cases we will recommend performing a blower-door test, which allows us to more accurately pinpoint air leaks. Depending on the leaks that need to be sealed, we create an air-sealing plan that is cost-effective, sensible, and that will provide the most value in your particular home or building. Our sealing crew will then properly address each area of concern with products that are proven to safely seal and will stand the test of time.
OTHER THINGS TO CONSIDER:
Sometimes we are asked, “Can my house be sealed too tight?” The answer to this question can actually be both “yes and no.” The reality is, a totally sealed indoor environment is almost impossible to achieve, but even in that case, it is far better to control the amount of filtered, fresh-air ventilation brought into the conditioned space than to rely on air leaks to do the job. Rest assured, our experts will work with you throughout the process to ensure a safe, healthy, comfortable, and efficient indoor environment!

“Another great crew. The one thing I personally dread about any hired home project is the two days afterward of pickup and cleanup. Definitely not true with either of your crews. The basement is as orderly or disorderly as I ever have it, and IT IS CLEAN—that’s an upgrade in itself. Thank you, I will recommend your services whenever there is an opportunity.”
Richard S.Hopkins, MN
“Such a great improvement…wish I had called you years ago!”
Coral S.Lakeville, MN
