What is insulation?
Generally, any material which slows down or retards the flow or transfer of heat or cold. Building insulation types are classified according to form as loose fill, flexible, rigid, reflective, and foamed-in-place. All types are rated according to their ability to resist heat and cold air flow (R-Value).
What is R-Value?
Insulation-quality ratings are based on what’s called R-value, a measurement of the insulation’s resistance to heat or cold change. The higher the R-value, the better the insulation. The R-value of thermal insulation depends on the type of material, its thickness, and density. In calculating the R-value of a multi-layered installation, the R-values of the individual layers are added. Installing more insulation in your home increases R-value and the resistance to air flow.
Why insulate in the first place?
High-quality insulation is one of the best investments you can make for your home. Although you may balk at the price of better insulation, the money you’ll save on your utility bills will quickly make the investment pay off. Proper insulation will pay for itself again and again. You can pay thousands of dollars for improved windows, which only consists of about 20% of the total outside wall area, but why not invest far less for superior insulation, which can make up over 80% of the outside wall area?
Should I insulate my home?
The answer is probably “yes” if you:
- Have an older home and haven’t added insulation;
- Are uncomfortably cold in the winter or hot in the summer—adding insulation creates a more uniform temperature and increases comfort;
- Build a new house or an addition, or installing new siding or roofing;
- Pay excessive energy bills;
- Are bothered by noise from the outdoors—insulation helps to muffle sound;
- Are concerned about the effect of energy use on the environment.
What should I consider when insulating my home?
Consider factors such as your climate, building design, and budget when selecting insulation R-value for your home. These all play a critical role in your decision to insulate your home.
